In 1984, the Fiero Coupe tested by the NHTSA as the safest production car for sale in the U.S.A.
The P-car was originally intended to be called the Pontiac Pegasus and its emblem depicted a winged horse, designed by stylist Jon Albert. The Pontiac sales organization rejected that name, however, on the dubious grounds that people wouldn't know how to pronounce it. Bruce MacDonald, Pontiac's director of public relations, ultimately came up with the name Fiero, (Italian for "Proud") which became the P-car's official name.
